Mid-America Council Mourns John McCollister
The Mid-America Council mourns the loss of a long-time, dedicated volunteer. John Y. McCollister of Omaha died at 92. John was a three-term congressman from the U.S. House of Representatives who served from 1971 to 1977. He became involved in Scouting when his son was 8. He ran a Cub Scout Pack in Dundee when our council was named the Covered Wagon Council. John’s first year on the council board was 1955, and he currently served on the Board of Advisors. He was the council chair from 1963-1966, the Region 8 Chair from 1969-71, and he served on the National Executive Board from 1969-1971. In 2002, John received the Citizen of the Year award from the Mid-America Council, as well as became a Heritage Patron. John and his family are dear friends of the Mid-America Council His humor, commitment, and spirit will be missed. In an interview with John, he said this about Scouting: “It is the greatest opportunity to make a difference in our future. You are making an investment in the character of our youth.” -John Y.
