Units Earn the Unit Marketing Award of Excellence

Does your unit have a story that has received local media attention? We want you to share it with us. We also want to encourage you to seek media coverage for the good things your unit does. Sometimes we don't realize how big of an impact Scouting makes on our youth and communities. Something as basic as a roadside clean up with your Boy Scout Troop could merit a full page in your local newspaper!

The Unit Marketing Award of Excellence is for packs, troops, teams, crews, posts and ships. The award is designed to encourage units to share the news of what they are doing in their communities with local media, like newspaper, radio, TV, school newsletters, church bulletins and more!

Featured:

Pack 208.2 with War Eagle District
Pack 208.2 is our quarterly winner! They submitted THREE different articles. One was a Webelos Citizen Day Camp. The Webelos worked on their citizen badge, they met with Senator Grassley at his town hall meeting in Orange City, met with Mayor Douma and attended a city council meeting. A huge photo and an article were in the paper. They also were featured with a photo for a pack visit to the capital. Dens visited the newspaper office (Sioux City Capital – Democrat) to complete various requirements for badges and took a tour with managing editor, Doug Calsbeek. Additionally, they were featured in the paper for their 2013 Pinewood Derby – with another big photo! Thank you to Pack 208.2 for getting out in the public and showing how fun Scouting can be! You really know how to rock the public relations!!

Troop 188 with War Eagle District
Troop 188 is coming in at a very close second place – also with THREE submissions! They had five Eagle Scouts interviewed by KCAU Channel 9. They also got coverage for Eagle Scout projects in the Le Mars Daily Sentential. Finally, they got coverage for their join Blue & Gold/Green & Gold. They had 10 boys crossover from the pack to the troop! Way to go!

Pack 2 with Lewis & Clark District
We'd also like to feature Pack 2. They did an awesome job promoting Scouting in the Florence Days Parade! Their boys partnered with Troop 20 and built a giant Pinewood Derby car. One side was a military humvee, the other side was a more traditional looking Pinewood Derby car that had a banner hanging from it directing people to the web. Great job!

Pack 377 with Lewis & Clark District
Additionally, we are featuring Pack 377 for the coverage of their pack at an annual cake auction. They raised $735 to purchase food and household products for the Tri-City Food Pantry, which serves Ralston, LaVista, and Papillion. They got a nice photo and article in the paper. Nice work!

Troop 308 from Soaring Eagle District
Troop 308 received awesome coverage from WOWT Channel 6 for Alex Rasmussen's Eagle project. He and the troop loaded up 6,495 books to take to Mount View Elementary School. This was his second donation of books – the first was 465 books in December. Such a great project!

Recognition:

All units submitting an application will receive a certificate. They will also receive recognition in the BSA Bugle and on the Council website. Quarterly winners will receive a special patch for each member of their unit.

All of these units did an amazing job sharing our Scouting story with the public. You all had very deserving and newsworthy events.
